In 2003 I volunteered to be a mentor for the Adams High School Robotic team. The league was called “OCCRA” Oakland County Competitive Robotics Association. I thought the program was a very constructive way for students spending there spare time. To my surprise we took 1st place. In 2005 I took a job at Magna with the Intier Automotive Seating Group and they sponsored Novi High School robotics team in a league called “FIRST” For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.
This League was at a national level. I really had no choice in being a mentor because the robot was half being built out side my office door. Again to my surprise we took 1st place two years in a row at the national level. The first league gives out 9 million dollars in scholarships and by taking 1st places allows one senior a four year scholarship of a minimum of $5000.00 a year. We all won metals similar to Olympic metals but the real reward was giving a senior a scholarship each year.
